What HooBuy parcel insurance costs, what it pays, and where its own pages disagree

Status and facts checked .

Short answer: HooBuy insurance costs 3% of item value plus shipping, with any shipping coupon deducted first, and it covers transit only: delay, customs seizure, and loss or damage. For Brazil, parcels without insurance get no compensation, and payouts are capped at ¥5,000 for the item and ¥3,000 for shipping. HooBuy's pages disagree on the claim window (90 or 120 days) and on delay terms.

The 3% premium and what it is calculated on

HooBuy's premium is (item value + shipping cost) x 3% [id 110]. The item side is the "declared value" in the general terms, which we read as the figure you state when you submit the parcel. If you apply a logistics coupon, its value comes off the shipping cost first, and the discounted part is not insured. In HooBuy's Brazil section the 3% buys customs clearance cover and loss/damage cover; in the general terms it covers delay too. Insurance is optional and exists only on lines tagged "Insurance Available" in the estimator, and every line we read for Germany, Brazil, Italy, the US, France and the UK carried that tag on 26 October 2026. See HooBuy coupons for how shipping coupons work.

The premium is 3% of value plus shipping, minus any coupon on the shipping part.

Three covers, two sets of wording

HooBuy sells delay, customs seizure and loss/damage cover. The estimator attaches short terms to each line; the help centre has longer ones, and they do not match.

HooBuy insurance wording by source, read 26 October 2026
CoverEstimator line textHelp centre [id 110]
DelayNot delivered within 45 days: refund of 20% of actual shipping; apply after 31 daysIntro: 30-40 days, 20% of shipping refunded. Detail: not signed within 45 days gives a 20% logistics coupon, filed within 90 days, delay beyond the route's estimated time by three business days
Customs seizureCarrier confirms seizure; apply 30 days after dispatch; maximum is insured item plus freightInterim 20% coupon on detention; 100% of declared value plus shipping if confiscated
Loss/damageCarrier confirms loss or damage; apply 30 days after dispatch100% if lost; 100% of the damaged item's value; undetermined cause 20% coupon; recipient fault five 20% coupons

So the delay cover is a refund in one place and a coupon in another, and the trigger is 30-40 days in one paragraph and 45 in two others. The estimator also lists a Delay cover on Brazil lines, while the help centre's Brazil section names only customs and loss/damage. We read the estimator text as the one attached to the product you pick, but HooBuy has not said which wins. Some lines do not list every cover: the two US lines we read showed Lost/Damage and Delay but no Customs Seizure.

Read the insurance text on the exact line you choose, and screenshot it.

Brazil: no insurance, no compensation

HooBuy says a Brazil-bound parcel without insurance is not eligible for any insurance compensation [id 110]. With it, customs and loss compensation is 100%, capped at ¥5,000 for item value and ¥3,000 for shipping. The timings differ by situation:

  • Customs rejects documents you supplied: payout 45 days after approval of your proof of communication.
  • Customs gives no clear answer: payout starts on day 90.
  • Item held for trademark verification and then returned or confiscated: apply after 90 days.
  • You refuse to provide documents, or waive clearance, within 30 days of the notice: insurance rights are lost.
  • Loss caused by the recipient: five 20% logistics coupons.

You must supply documents within 30 days of a notice. The claim window is stated as 120 calendar days from shipping in the Brazil section and 90 in the exclusions: use 90. The customs side is on HooBuy customs and tax ID and the country summary on HooBuy to Brazil.

For Brazil, buy the cover or expect nothing, and answer any customs notice inside 30 days.

How a payout is worked out, and what is not covered

For insured parcels HooBuy pays the actual shipping cost plus the actual item value, capped at the insured amount [id 111]. If delay compensation was already paid and the parcel is then confirmed lost, seized or damaged, the delay payment is deducted. If the value you can prove differs from the insured value, payment is pro-rata and never above the insured amount, so declare the true value. HooBuy does not publish the pro-rata formula. Only one claim per tracking number is allowed.

Excluded: force majeure, loss caused by the recipient (wrong address, refusing delivery), goods in the excluded list such as tobacco, valuables, perishables and virtual goods, and seizures where the recipient did not cooperate with customs or tax payment [id 110, 111]. Uninsured parcels fall back on each route's standard through after-sales or customer service, and customs seizure, signed receipt and intact packaging with missing contents are no-pay cases [id 112, 103]. Insurance is not available for forwarded parcels.

Payout is value plus shipping up to the insured amount, with many recipient-side exclusions.

Worked example: ¥250 item on a Brazil line

Python, HooBuy's rates ¥6.04 per US$1 and ¥6.91 per €1. Example item ¥250; Br-standard-f 1,000 g quote ¥123.79 (26 October 2026).

Premium: (250 + 123.79) x 3% = 373.79 x 0.03 = ¥11.21 = US$1.86.

With an example ¥20 coupon: (250 + 103.79) x 3% = ¥10.61.

Parcel lost, caps not reached: 250 + 123.79 = ¥373.79 = US$61.89.

Delay cover on the estimator wording: 20% x 123.79 = ¥24.76 = US$4.10.

For comparison, Germany, DHL europe package-f1, 1,000 g, ¥98.20: premium (250 + 98.20) x 3% = ¥10.45 = €1.51; delay payout 20% x 98.20 = ¥19.64 = €2.84.

The delay payout is small next to the premium, so the real protection is customs and loss. Line prices are on HooBuy shipping cost, and total charges on HooBuy fees.

A ¥11.21 premium protects ¥373.79 of value, but delay cover pays only ¥24.76.

Insurance covers transit, not a stuck order

On our HooBuy status page HooBuy carries the label Hold: reviewers on Trustpilot and Reclame Aqui described paid orders stuck at "Purchased" and unpaid refunds between June and September 2026. Insurance does not touch those cases, because coverage starts at dispatch from the warehouse. For cancellations and returns, read HooBuy refunds and returns; for contact routes, HooBuy support. Pay per order, and insure only parcels you are about to ship.

Insurance protects the journey, not the wait before it.

What HooBuy buyers ask

How much does HooBuy insurance cost?

The premium is (item or declared value + shipping cost) x 3% [id 110]. If you use a shipping coupon, its value is deducted from the shipping cost before the 3% is applied. For a ¥250 item and a ¥123.79 Brazil line the premium is ¥11.21, about US$1.86 at HooBuy's own rate of ¥6.04 per US$1. You choose it when you submit the parcel.

How do I claim HooBuy insurance?

HooBuy's pages give no step-by-step form. The estimator says compensation for seizure or loss can be applied for 30 days after dispatch, and delay after 31 days, and to consult online customer service for the standard. For Brazil, HooBuy says it will contact you about customs issues, and if customs rejects your documents you send proof of communication. Write to hello@hoobuy.com and keep tracking screenshots.

How long do I have to file a HooBuy insurance claim?

HooBuy's own article gives two answers: 120 calendar days from shipping in the Brazil section, and 90 calendar days in the exclusions and the general terms [id 110]. We cannot tell which applies. File as early as the claim start allows, and treat 90 days as the deadline so a contradiction never costs you the payout.

Does HooBuy insurance cover a parcel stuck at Purchased?

No. HooBuy's terms say liability becomes effective once the parcel is dispatched from the warehouse and ends when the recipient signs [id 110], though one Brazil passage says cover starts when the transaction is established. An order stuck at Purchased has not shipped, so insurance is irrelevant. Cancellation and refund routes apply instead; some Trustpilot and Reclame Aqui complainants say those were slow or unpaid between June and September 2026.

Can I get the premium back?

Only in some cases. If you cancel before the parcel leaves the warehouse, the premium is fully refunded; once it is dispatched, insurance takes effect and is not refundable. A domestic return inside mainland China refunds the premium; an international return does not [id 110]. So the 3% is spent the moment the parcel ships.

Is a forwarded parcel insured by HooBuy?

No. HooBuy's insurance terms say it is not available for Forwarding or Transshipment orders, meaning items sent in from other platforms for consolidation [id 110]. It applies to shopping-agent parcels on lines where the estimator shows the Insurance Available tag. Check the tag for your destination before submitting, because availability varies by route.
