What a HooBuy order really costs: every fee, the 8% clause and one order priced both ways

Status and facts checked .

Short answer: HooBuy publishes no fixed service fee on purchases: its fee articles say there is none, while its registration agreement says 8% of the goods price and 8% of shipping. On a ¥180 example order sent to Germany, that gap is ¥22.26 (€3.22 at HooBuy's rate). The rest is seller freight, shipping by weight, a ¥8 declaration cost and optional services priced from ¥1.

The cost anatomy: five parts, one of them optional

HooBuy's own formula is short: the total equals item cost plus international shipping plus customs charges, where item cost is the product price plus the seller's domestic delivery to its Xiamen warehouse [id 9]. We add optional services. HooBuy is on Hold here, so read these figures as a price list for a small pay-per-order first purchase.

Import tax and duty at your door are not in HooBuy's bill. The shipping figure is from HooBuy's estimator (weight only); the HooBuy shipping cost page has the other lines.

Four parts are unavoidable; only the services are a choice.

Service price list: the order form against the help centre

HooBuy's order form showed newer prices than its help centre on 26 October 2026, and several appear only there.

The 8% clause against "no service fee", on one order

Two sets of HooBuy articles disagree. The purchasing articles say there is "no service fee" for items from Taobao, Tmall, 1688, JD and similar platforms [id 24] and call buying "free" [id 29]. The registration agreement says an agent purchase carries a platform service fee of 8% of the goods price, and that international shipping carries a platform fee of 8% of the shipping cost, with minor differences possible from exchange rates [id 115]. We could not confirm which one a live checkout applies, so here is the same order both ways.

Example order (prices are examples): ¥180 hoodie, ¥10 seller freight, 1,000 g to Germany on DHL europe package-f1 (¥98.20 in HooBuy's estimator), ¥8 declaration.

Reading A, "no service fee": 180 + 10 + 98.20 + 8 = ¥296.20, which is €42.87 at ¥6.91 per euro.

Reading B, the 8% clause: 8% of 180 = ¥14.40, and 8% of 98.20 = ¥7.86, so 296.20 + 14.40 + 7.86 = ¥318.46, which is €46.09.

Gap: 318.46 − 296.20 = ¥22.26, or €3.22, about 7.5% of the cheaper total.

We applied the 8% to the item price only, because the agreement does not say whether freight or the declaration count; adding 8% of the ¥10 freight would raise reading B by ¥0.80.

Plan for reading B, about 7.5% more, and treat anything lower as a pleasant surprise.

The handling fee HooBuy does not publish

HooBuy's help centre says a handling fee applies to cross-border transactions because of exchange rates and bank charges, and it gives no percentage [id 52]. You can pay in dollars or euros without yuan [id 43], so the only way to learn the card cost is to compare your checkout total with the yuan prices converted at your issuer's rate.

Prices for tag removal, bag removal, reinforcement and "Speedy Response" are not stated. Insurance is: HooBuy's article gives a premium of 3% of (declared value plus shipping), and on the example above that is (180 + 98.20) × 3% = ¥8.35, or €1.21 [id 110]. See HooBuy insurance.

Assume a card fee exists, size it from your own checkout, and ask support for the percentage in writing.

Clear Balance and points: two ways the bill moves

"Clear Balance" is the order status for a shortfall. If the seller changes the price after you pay, which HooBuy says is mostly the domestic delivery fee, you pay the difference on the instructions page [id 20, id 8]. Several items from one seller in one checkout pay domestic delivery once [id 14].

Points go the other way. The order form says points can pay up to 50% of an order and up to 50% of a parcel. On the example order, half of ¥296.20 is ¥148.10 (€21.43). HooBuy's help pages describe paying into an account balance; we suggest paying per order instead, and on Hold that matters more. Coupons apply only to shipping, one per parcel; see the HooBuy coupon page.

Expect a possible balance request, and confirm points at checkout.

Return and exchange fees: the tier table

HooBuy's return articles also disagree. The older rule gives one free return a calendar month, then ¥5 each, plus shipping legs [id 7]. A newer article, from 4 September 2024, uses tiers [id 1564]:

HooBuy return and exchange service fee by number of uses (id 1564)
UsesReturnExchange
0 to 1¥0¥0
2 to 5¥5¥10
6 to 9¥10¥20
Over 10¥20¥40

The table skips exactly 10 uses, and the free allowance is "per calendar month" in some articles and "every 30 days" in others. The fee applies only without a quality problem, once the item is stocked and the free quota is used; the request window is 5 days from stock-in. See HooBuy refunds and returns for payout times.

Returns cost the shipping legs plus a ¥0 to ¥40 fee, and the 5-day window is the real constraint.

Gebühren und Versandkosten: what German buyers add

Readers in Germany search "Gebühren" (fees) and "Versandkosten" (shipping costs) separately, and HooBuy bills them separately: Gebühren are the services above, Versandkosten come from your line, ¥98.20 (€14.21) per kilogram on DHL europe package-f1. Beyond HooBuy's bill, Germany charges 19% import VAT from the first euro, and the EU applies a flat €3 duty per tariff category on parcels up to €150 since 1 July 2026 (Council of the EU).

How HooBuy handles that €3 on its "Tax Free" lines is not published, and its article calling parcels up to €150 "usually exempt" is outdated. Our HooBuy to Germany page covers the tax side, and the HooBuy shipping calculator prices your weight. Start from the HooBuy spreadsheet home page, or send us the row and pay per order.

German buyers pay HooBuy's yuan bill converted at the card rate, then VAT and the flat duty at the door.

What HooBuy buyers ask

Does HooBuy charge a service fee?

HooBuy contradicts itself. Its help articles on purchasing say there is no service fee for Taobao, Tmall, 1688 and similar platforms, yet its user registration agreement sets a platform fee of 8% of the goods price and 8% of the shipping cost. We placed no order, so we cannot say which one a checkout applies; check the total before paying.

What does the HooBuy customs declaration cost?

HooBuy's help centre says the customs declaration cost for a parcel is generally ¥8, depending on the shipping method. At HooBuy's rate of ¥6.91 per euro that is about €1.16 per parcel, not per item. It is charged per parcel, not per item, so combining items into one parcel spreads it thinner.

How much do HooBuy QC photos and video cost?

HooBuy's order form priced detailed photos at ¥1 each, a QC video at ¥15, fine inspection at ¥5 and a picture set at ¥8 on 26 October 2026. The help centre lists only the ¥1 photo, with a cap of 20 against 10 in the order form. Three standard photos are described as usual, but a guaranteed free count is not published.

Can I pay for part of a HooBuy order with points?

Yes, up to a limit. HooBuy's interface config on 26 October 2026 says points may pay up to 50% of an order and up to 50% of a parcel. How points are earned and what one point is worth are not published in the help centre, so check the checkout screen before relying on them.

What does Clear Balance mean on a HooBuy order?

Clear Balance is an order status meaning HooBuy needs you to pay a difference after your payment. The help centre says it arises when the seller changes the price, mainly the domestic delivery fee, and you pay the gap through the instructions page. No cap is stated, so read the instructions page before paying.

Are HooBuy's fees the same for buyers in Germany and Brazil?

HooBuy's help centre lists its service prices in yuan and we found no country-specific service prices, but the shipping line and the tax at your door differ. Germany pays 19% import VAT and Brazil has its own import tax rules, both outside HooBuy's bill. Convert at HooBuy's rate, then add local tax from our country pages for a landed total.
